The American Revolution

What historical event fascinates you the most?

I’m not sure I can name one historical event that fascinates me the most.  I’m the type of person who flits between “favorites”. My tastes and interest in food, music, and topics depend entirely on the day.

The historical event that fascinates me the most now is the Revolutionary War.

I never really liked history.  Mr. B, if you are reading this, I daydreamed a lot in your History classes. You were nice to look at, but sir, you were boring.

My daughter’s teacher, however, took a brilliant approach to history lessons. He assigned a historical fiction book, My Brother Sam is Dead, written by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier, as a precursor to the lesson.

To support my daughter in a subject that hasn’t been her strong suit (either), I purchased a used copy of the book to read along with her. I couldn’t put it down! This was a great book and, at least for me, had the intended effect. It piqued my interest in the Revolutionary War.

I’m currently working my way through 1776, written by David McCullough. While it’s not as much as a page turner, I’m fascinated by the events and people who propelled us to where we are today.
