Midnight…

What book are you reading right now?

Currently, I’m reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt.

First, a plug for Thriftbooks.  If you’ve never used this discount online bookstore, you’re missing out. “Acceptable” is always good and you can get a hardback book for around $4.50 USD. I love my Kindle, but I love paper copy books more. I always try to purchase through Thriftbooks first, ’cause I’m a cheap ass.

So, while selecting a few books for my daughter and I, I was notified that I had credit for a free book and dropped Midnight… in my cart. I’m not sure what piqued my interest about this book. It’s a non-fiction, which I normally pass up.

Despite being non-fiction, however, it’s written in a novel format. The book is set in Savannah, Georgia. The descriptions of the beautiful squares and moss-hung trees already has me looking for plane tickets and hotel rooms. I have officially added Savannah to my bucket list.

Berendt tells the story in first person, weaving his experience with this new to him town into the history through interviews and archive digs. I’ve already “met” some interesting characters and been “let in” on some of the scandals and gossip. Savannah’s history is rich, seedy, and full of drama.

I freaking love it.

I just finished Chris Beats Cancer, which is worth mentioning. Again, a non-fiction. Okay, maybe I don’t normally pass up NFs.

It depicts author Chris Wark’s diagnosis with stage III colon cancer at 26 years old, his decision to pursue alternate, natural therapies, and the strategies that saved his life.

Spoiler alert, our diets and lifestyles are killing us.

The book is chock full of mind-blowing statistics. The money in our “health care system” is fucking sickening. It shows how misleading and biased “survival rates” are. For example, one doctor presented a 50% survival rate for using chemo. This doctor completely glossed over the fact that there was only a 6% mortality rate, and only THREE people out of SIX benefited from this $40k a year additional cost. 50% equals three people. Ridiculous.

There is a ton of great information on how our bodies function, what types of foods we should eat to support those functions, and how exercise, stress relief, and a positive mindset are, literally, life-saving.

This book was published in 2018, so I’m sure there are updated statistics out there, but I strongly recommend reading this book. It’s definitely an eye-opener.
