What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?
In a previous post, I joked about alternate life paths. One path, following my childhood dream of becoming a marine biologist, was actually true. I even have the shark tattoo to prove it. Unfortunately, I was destined for other things.
I’ve also kicked around the idea of pursuing a Naturopathic Medical degree, as I talked about in ‘Writing and Healing‘. Maybe this is something I can pursue on the side for Gee-Whiz knowledge, but it’s not in the cards as an alternative career.
I have too many years under my belt to leave Government work, but I’ve seriously considered (and perhaps acted on) pursuing a new position that is more in line with my morals and values.
I cried yesterday.
It takes a lot to frazzle me at work. I’m passionate about what I do, but I’ve learned that some things are completely outside of my control. I try not to take anything personally. If something comes down from leadership, we make it happen, regardless how illogical it may seem. There is a lot of dumb shit that comes down; par for the course.
I’m also one of those annoying people who not only embrace but get excited with change. I cannot stand the “this is always how we’ve done it” mentality. I’m constantly evaluating our processes. I am open to other perspectives and can see potential future outcomes. Can we work smarter, not harder? Are my staff being utilized to the best of their ability? How can we better support our customers? I have a knack for inspiring my managers to embrace change as well, thus creating a trickle down excitement of “what’s to come” to all staff in my branch.
The problem is, I have a really, really hard time getting behind directed change if it’s wrong. Which is why I cried yesterday. I am so completely frustrated with the direction that our leadership is pushing regarding a certain topic. It’s political, it’s bullshit, and their “vision” violates my basic standards and understanding of right and wrong.
So, it seems as if it’s time to move on… What that alternative career path might be, is to be determined. My goal is to finish out my public servant career in an organization that embraces and utilizes my innate skills, allows me to achieve my professional objectives, and aligns with my ethical values.
Doesn’t that sound like an interview ready response? 😉
Good luck with your job search!

I can think of a number of times I had to put the company face on and lead in a direction I thought was senseless. I feel your pain.
