She Gone

Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

Everything, and I mean everything, seems to be accomplished via a computer nowadays. And yes, I think of that smaller version that resides in your purse or pocket as a computer. So is that tablet, refrigerator family hub, firestick, eReader, and all of those of other gadgets and gizmos.

Obviously, the benefits of being able to connect, research, and perform an endless number of tasks online far outweigh the cons. But, do I think we are “smarter” as a society because of computers? Absolutely not. We’ve not only dumbed ourselves down with Facebook reels and TikTok shorts, but we are adding a ridiculous amount of stressors in the form of eMail accounts, social media apps, and notifications, all in the name of being connected and doing things the easy way.

We are setting ourselves up for societal failure, but I will save that for another conspiracy theory post. 😏 This Daily Prompt is supposed to be about me, right?

My life would be so much simpler without a computer, even if it meant everyone else in the world carried on as normal.

I have to take a few days every so often to decompress and step away from it all. The technological strain is real and very overwhelming for me. Maybe part of that is my fault? I strap into my work desk at a bright and early 6a and don’t log off until after 3p. I eat at my desk, ensuring I’m available for the sporadic chat, eMail, or phone call from one of my <eight> bosses. It is constant.

When I log off from work, I am right back on a computer, checking my personal eMail accounts, helping my daughter navigate homework on her Chromebook, and the likes.

Granted, remove my computer and I would be completely disconnected from the outside world.

I’m okay with that.

No job <hallelujah>, or if my husband didn’t allow me to be a tropy wife, I’d get a job that was more manual and less technical. My kids’ teachers would have to communicate with me old school, by sending notes home <maybe this would cut down on the “helicopter teaching”>. I’d have to write checks to pay bills the old fashioned way <still do on a lot of them>. I would be forced to research in books <that is still the best way I learn>. I would write letters by hand to keep in contact with loved ones <not a problem>. I wouldn’t be able to connect with you, my dear readers, but maybe I would be focused more on the “long write” (i.e., book) and less on my “easy write” <not saying that blogging is easy, only it’s more of an instant gratification>.

I would be forced to do more and scroll less, which sounds like an amazing way to live.

What about you? What would your life be like with no computer?
